From the Q&A above: "By utilizing privacy codes, you can ensure that your communications are not heard by unauthorized individuals."

This is something that radio manufactures need to stop advertising. It gives a false impression of secure communications. Privacy codes do not ensure communications are not heard by unauthorized individuals. The "privacy codes" are actually what is called tone-code squelch. It keeps you (the receiver) from hearing any transmission that does not include that specific tone. The purpose is a squelch - so you won't hear spurious transmissions and noise on that channel, as well as other users who are using a different tone or no tone at all.

If your radios are set to use a specific privacy code (i.e. a specific tone), when one of the team presses their PTT to talk, it will transmit that tone along with whatever they are saying. The receiving radios will listen for that tone and only when they hear the tone they will turn on the audio to your earpiece. This means that any radio that is set to not use a privacy code (i.e. no tone) doesn't care and will turn on the speaker for any and all traffic. A bubble pack of FRS radios from your local Walmart probably doesn't have the "privacy codes" set by default; so the neighborhood boys playing cops and robbers can absolutely listen in.

I hope this helps clarify...

Good information but I would like to add GMRS does require a license and the radios you recommend are actually less watts then most GMRS radios(5 watts some channels with a hand held). 4 watts is plenty though for most needs so no big deal. I 100% agree your own frequency and a license is the best choice.

On the other hand a person can take a baofeng and still find your frequency and figure out your privacy tone and interfere with you.

GMRS and ham radio you can't use encryption. Business licenses you can use encryption with digital radios. That though also can be monitored with the right scanner though. I have used the Baofeng a little and I can hit a repeater 40 miles away with an external antenna 25 feet up. For having one at the house for emergency use they would work but our purposes they are not a great choice. A digital radio on a business license might be the best choice if privacy is a concern most people will not know how to monitor you. They still work on VHF/UHF.

Privacy tones are not private

But they scanners that will decrypt that also.
