Jesus tells us his reason for instructing his apostles to buy a sword in verse 37: "For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled...". The swords are the best self-defense weapon of that time, but Jesus is telling them to buy swords for another reason (to look like transgressors).
When Jesus tells them two swords is enough, this is only enough for defense if they stay together. But as we know, the apostles split up to spread the gospel.
HOWEVER! I still think Luke 22:36 is useful for the ABC topic. Jesus wouldn't command his apostles to sin in order to fulfill a prophecy. For example, he wouldn't say "go murder that guy, for the scripture must be fulfilled". So what anyone can take from this passage is that Jesus himself said it's okay to own and carry a weapon.
If anyone tells you this passage doesn't justify carrying a weapon, tell 'em Mike said it was ok : )
